US Congress passes resolution celebrates India’s Independence Day

In a significant move highlighting the close ties between the United States and India, members of the US Congress have put forth a resolution in the House of Representatives to officially recognize 15 August, Indian Independence Day, as a National Day of Celebration for the two largest democracies in the world.

The resolution has been introduced by Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar and enjoys co-sponsorship from Congressman Buddy Carter and Brad Sharman.

Bipartisan Delegation to Attend Red Fort Address

Adding to the resonance of the occasion, a bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers is set to travel to India on 15 August to attend PM Modi’s address at the iconic Red Fort. The delegation is co-led by Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna and Congressman Michael Waltz, who are co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans.

Khanna expressed his honor to lead the delegation and underscored the historical importance of the US-India relationship. He emphasized that the visit would bolster cooperation and coordination on pressing issues, including decarbonization, digitization, economic partnership, defense ties, and the promotion of pluralism and human rights.

The delegation’s itinerary includes meetings with business, government, tech, and Bollywood figures in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and New Delhi, as well as a visit to Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s historic memorial.

Khanna and Waltz’s previous initiative, the US-India Summit on Capitol Hill, showcased panels and remarks from government officials, specialists, and Indian-American leaders, affirming the strong bond between the two nations.

A Shared Bond of Democracy

The resolution emphasizes that both India and the United States are the world’s leading democracies, rooted in the principle of people’s supreme authority to govern. This shared democratic foundation, stemming from their respective histories as former British colonies, forms the bedrock of the strong alliance between the two nations.

The resolution lauds the alliance as a driving force for advancing global democracy while promoting peace, stability, and prosperity on a global scale.

Honoring Contributions and Values

The resolution also acknowledges the significant contributions of Americans with Indian heritage to the United States. Many of these individuals hold positions as lawmakers, military personnel, and law enforcement officers, embodying the values enshrined in the US Constitution and enriching the nation’s cultural diversity.

Furthermore, the resolution deems it “proper and desirable” to celebrate Indian Independence Day alongside the Indian people, reinforcing the democratic principles that underpin the foundations of both nations.

A Presidential Proclamation

Highlighting the significance of the day, the resolution notes that US President Joe Biden has requested a proclamation encouraging Americans to commemorate Indian Independence Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The resolution reflects on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official state visit to the United States on 22 June. This visit is portrayed as a landmark event that deepened the level of trust and mutual understanding between the two nations. Common goals and shared commitments to freedom, democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, and respect for human rights were at the forefront of discussions.

During the visit, PM Modi engaged with President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, and prominent figures from Silicon Valley.
